In the fall of 1996, Joe Emanuel was assigned the task of preparing approximately twenty-five 11th and 12th grade students for the Ohio 9th Grade Math Proficiency Test. During the three-week remediation (yes, we know that's not nearly long enough) Mr. Emanuel found himself creating a lot of worksheets, and specifically, the questions that went on them. After about the fifth set, it dawned on him that this was something a computer could do, and thus was born the concept of Moogie Math. Having a degree in Computer Science, Mr. Emanuel spent all of Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks programming the first version of Moogie Math. By February, Moogie was ready for his debut with students preparing for the spring testing.

His fellow teachers were impressed with Moogie Math, and they encouraged Mr. Emanuel to exhibit it at an educational conference in Columbus the following May. Noticed mostly by librarians and technology coordinators, Moogie Math became an instant hit with everyone who used it. There was simply nothing else like it.

By 1999, Moogie Math continued to evolve and spread across the US. It was at this time that the 4th Grade database was created and Mr. Emanuel released Moogie Math Plus. The Plus version allowed teachers to create worksheets and tests by selecting how many questions for each objective should be used. Because the numbers always change, every worksheet was different. As you can imagine, the ability to create an unlimited number of worksheets customized for precisely what their students needed was very well received by teachers.

Over the next few years, the question databases in Moogie's arsenal were modified and improved. Following the creation of the 6th Grade database, the 9th Grade database had to be overhauled because of changing educational standards. (Ohio was finally catching up with the NCTM and NAEP.) Using the existing 9th Grade as a starting point, both the current 8th and 10th Grade databases were formed. Essentially, the questions for the 8th Grade were watered down and padded, while the questions for the 10th Grade were made much more challenging.

As time went on, the use of Moogie Math continued to spread, mostly by word-of-mouth and over the Internet, but there was one drawback that had been with us since day one: we could only run on computers with the Windows operating system. This meant about half the schools in the US (who use Macs) couldn't use Moogie. But that has now changed!

On April 15, 2004, Moogie Math officially went online as Moogie on the Net! Moogie on the Net will never truly be finished, because it will remain a work in progress. Educational standards continue to change, and we have a never-ending list of features we want to add. But as the number one online resource for parents and teachers, the changes we make to the website are available instantly. And now, everyone with Internet access has access to Moogie Math!

Here are the changes/updates made to Moogie on the Net in 2008

  • We're still working on them!! (Where does the time go so quickly??)

Here are the changes/updates made to Moogie on the Net in 2007

  • Online Assessments/Assignments now referred to as simply "Tests."
  • Streamlined/Redesigned the Teacher Home Page.
  • Added "General Arena" as a new page (showing student scores) under the new Teacher Home page.
  • Vastly improved the Teachers' overview of their Students' Online Test results!
  • Teachers no longer need to design tests - students can take our Common ones without teacher intervention.
  • Teachers who do make a Test now just Publish it - no more Open/Close/Archive hassles.
  • Teachers can now view and use other Teachers' Online Tests and MEPs - not just Teachers at the same school, but ALL Teachers who use Moogie. (Don't worry, we don't show anyone's name or school - it's completely anonymous).
  • Added "Difficulty Level" of each question when using the Browser & Inspector pages for Teachers and Parents (before, only students could see this).
  • Added the option for Teachers to choose where their students' efforts should be focused: on Workouts vs. Tests (any MEPs go before these).
  • Added ability for Teachers and Parents to view Network Rankings, Student Prize Rooms & ID Cards (before, only students could see these pages).
  • Renamed the Teachers' "Lesson Plans Bulletin Board" to "Teacher's Blog." (We really need to start getting Teachers to use this.)
  • New Version Numbering system shows the actual compile date of each module instead of arbitrary numbers.
  • Replaced Students' "Assignnments" tab with redesigned "Tests/AWWS" tab.
  • Redesigned Track Record pages for Students, Teachers, and Parents - much more usable!
  • Student Demos use one of "Mrs. Denise Demo's" students to show actual data for guests
  • As much as possible, made screens' width & height adjust to the browser's width & height
  • Made some queries more efficient (makes things run quicker for users)
  • We have more we plan to add by Halloween, but we aren't going to tell you. You'll just have to stay tuned! But we want you to be a part - share your ideas with us! Please contact us to tell us what features you would like to see us add.
Here are the changes/updates made to Moogie on the Net in 2006
  • Teachers can view Red Flags for questions students have repeated trouble with. New Red Flags are indicated by a waving red flag.
  • Teachers can instantly create an Assessment which includes the questions with Red Flags.
  • Students can Stomp their Red Flags (ideally with teachers right beside them to help). They are also given the opportunity to re-do questions (with different numbers, of course), even when answered correctly, to help reinforce what they have learned
  • Teachers have more control over students who repeatedly guess at answers (one of the drawbacks to having literally billions of questions available for students)
  • Students who become a part of the Moogie Math Millennium Club now see a much nicer certificate
  • Students can now see their Network Ranking - for both in their school and nationwide, and for either their grade or all grades combined
  • Students now have sharp graphical links instead of buttons on their home page
  • Moogie on the Net now fully supports the use of the Safari and Opera browsers
  • Teachers with new messages now see flashing lightning bolts
  • Easier reporting of a question with an error (OK, this won't be used much, but if it's needed, it's available)
  • More Data Pooling in the student module (this isn't something you see, but trust us, it's a good thing)
  • A fully inclusive Teacher's Guide to explain all the features of, and how to get the most out of, Moogie in the Net
  • New Teacher and Parent Home Pages
  • Teacher Hot Spots pages
  • Instantly send a message all students, a class, or an individual student with one click of the mouse
  • Send messages to other teachers at your school who also use Moogie on the Net
  • Share MEPs and Assessments with your colleagues to use with their students
  • New Data Pooling offers quicker access to your students' data.
