National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)

There is some controversy over the NCTM's published Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (PSSM) stance on the importance of learning arithmetic versus their more progressive approach to learning concepts. (Shown below, they list the content standard "Number & Operations" instead of "Arithmetic.") When Moogie was first created, back in 1997, the 9th Grade questions were the first to be created, and since it was created by a teacher for his students, "Arithmetic" was called just as it is, "Arithmetic." As Moogie evolved and the 4th and 6th grade databases were developed, we tried to be more politically correct. Hence, we used the labels "Numbers & Relations" and "Rounding & Estimating" instead of  "Arithmetic." Regardless of what anyone calls it, we all have the same goal: to educate our children.
